Fraser Island

Fraser Island, located offshore from the tourist town of Hervey Bay, is the world's largest sand island. The 123km long island has become popular as an eco-tourism venue, and it's World Heritage listing ensures that it will stay that way.

Fraser Island - Beautiful SunsetsOn the eastern side of Fraser Island, the main beach is 75 miles long. This beach is the premier beach-4Wding location in Australia because the sand shifts constantly to create huge dunes along the wide expanse of beach.

A shipwreck, the S.S. Meheno, is situated on the beachfront and is a great spot for fishing. The vessel was wrecked on the coast while being towed to Japan for destruction, so you could say it's untimely end was only a few weeks earlier than it would otherwise have been.

Fraser Island is about 3.5 hours drive north from Brisbane. A ferry or barge takes visitors and their vehicles to the island daily.
